American Legion Post 2001 receives $6,000 Grant

I am pleased to report that on May 14, 2019, our Leonard W. Kidd Memorial American Legion Post 2001 has been honored by Loudoun County’s 100 Women Strong philanthropic organization as a recipient of a $6,000 grant, which reflects full funding of our submitted request.

Seeking a grant from this organization was Finance Officer Richard Ryan’s idea. He authored the grant request and did the legwork to get it in front of the committee, who have until now only looked at 501(c)3 non-profit groups. He convinced them, and they agreed, to look at a Veteran 501(c)19 organization request for the first time ever in their 10 year history.

He and I attended the 100 Women Strong grant awarding reception at Telos on Tuesday evening, where the Group recognized us and 32 other community non-profits with grants ranging from $2000 to $20,000.

Our grant money is to be used to help veterans avoid eviction due to rent payment issues.

Many of the organization’s members including their President, Karen G. Schaufeld, made a point to seek us out afterwards to express how pleased and impressed they were with the work that our Post does in support of our veterans and our community.

We are grateful for their assistance in supporting the less fortunate Veterans in Loudoun County.

Proclamation of the 100th Year of the American Legion

At their March 21, 2019, meeting, the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors presented resolutions to recognize the accomplishments of individuals and groups in Loudoun County.

Proclamation to Proclaim March 15, 2019 as American Legion Centennial Day in Loudoun County:  This proclamation recognizes the 100th Anniversary of the American Legion, which was founded on March 15, 2019 at the American Club near Place de la Concorde in Paris, France, by members of the American Expeditionary Forces. On September 19, 1919, the United States Congress federally chartered American Legion as a patriotic veteran’s organization. Focusing on service to veterans, service members and communities, the Legion evolved from a group of war-weary veterans of World War I into one of the most influential non-profit groups in the United States. Today, membership stands at over 2 million in more than 13,000 posts worldwide.
