The First Honor Flight – Top of Virginia

The first Honor Flight – Top of VA (https://www.honorflight-tov.org ) for WWII, Korea, and Viet-Nam veterans of Loudoun County, departed the morning of Saturday, September 7, 2019 and returned to the Ashburn Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department (AVFRD) Station 6 on 7 September, 2019 around 5:00 pm.

History: The HF-TOV hub team has conducted several successful Honor Flight trips over the past 3-4 years, bringing veterans from the Shenandoah valley and Winchester area to visit their monuments and ANC. Ashburn American Legion Post 2001arranged with them to expand this fabulous opportunity to include the veterans of Loudoun County; we “recruited” veterans from several retirement communities in eastern Loudoun and our Post members, who have now filled this first trip!

American Legion Post 2001 plans to expand this opportunity through the public and partner organizations to reach more eligible vets, as well. We hope to continue facilitating trips from LoCo for some time in the future with your help. The bigger the list, the greater the chances to continue this great program.

Please tell your Loudoun County veteran friends to register today with HF-TOV so they can be on the list for future trips leaving from Loudoun County. Register at https://www.honorflight-tov.org/forms, or call (540) 692-9197.

There is no cost to the veteran! This is an “all expenses paid” day trip with fellow veterans to visit our monuments and witness the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery, among other events. Each veteran can request a friend or family member (but not spouse) be assigned as a Guardian who will accompany the veteran throughout the “flight”, or one will be assigned. Order of precedent is oldest to youngest — WWII, Korea and VN vet, with special consideration given to any vet who is diagnosed as terminal regardless of war era.

The Honor Flight is more than a visit to the monuments, which many of you have seen. This is an opportunity to join other veterans, share stories and enjoy the fellowship that few will ever know…and feel the pride and honor in which Veterans are held by many, many Americans.
