The American Revolution was initiated by the thirteen original colonies, against the Kingdom of Great Britain. The American people objected to Parliament’s direct taxation and its lack of colonial representation. The overthrow of British rule established the United States of America as the first republic in modern history extending over a large territory.

On July 2nd, 1776, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence. On July 4th, 1776, the thirteen colonies adopted Thomas Jefferson’s historic document, the Declaration of Independence. On September 3, 1783, the Treaty of Paris was signed between Great Britain and the United States, recognizing the United States, and making peace between the two nations. The American Revolution formally ended. Since then, July 4th has been celebrated as the birth of American independence, with festivities ranging from fireworks, parades and concerts to more casual family gatherings and barbecues.

It is estimated that between 25,000 – 70,000 patriots sacrificed their lives to bring Independence to this great nation.
